What to Expect from our sample making

96Failure Studio provides garment sample making services in Melbourne for independent designers and small fashion labels. We construct toiles and finished samples in-house, giving you a physical garment to assess fit, construction, and fabric behaviour before you commit to production.

❋ What is sample making?

Sample making is the process of constructing a physical version of your garment from the pattern. It's a critical step in product development and it's how you confirm that the pattern translates correctly into three dimensions, that the construction is sound, and that the garment fits and moves the way you intended.

No matter how refined your digital pattern is, there are things you can only know once fabric is in your hands. Sample making is where those discoveries happen in a controlled, low cost environment, before you're committed to a production run.

❋ How we work

At 96Failure Studio, sample making works with our patternmaking process. Your pattern and your sample are developed by the same studio, from the same brief — which means issues are identified and resolved quickly, without back-and-forth between separate suppliers.

Toile We begin with a toile — a construction sample in calico (for woven styles) or jersey (for knit styles), unless you'd prefer to sample directly in your production fabric. The toile is built with all seam finishes so fit and structure can be properly assessed. It's your opportunity to review the garment in three dimensions: how it fits, how it moves, and whether the proportions are right before we touch your final fabric.

Fit Review Once the toile is complete, we walk through it together. We assess fit across all points of measure, review construction details, and note any adjustments to be made to the pattern. This is a collaborative stage — your feedback shapes what happens next.

Final Sample With an agreed set of adjustments made to the pattern, we construct your final sample in your chosen fabric. This sample is sewn with all seam finishes and construction details, and is a true representation of how your production garments will look and feel.
